Manchester City finished the group stage in 22nd place, third from the bottom, earning the right to play in the Round of 16. It started with a goalless draw against Inter, followed by convincing wins against Slovan Bratislava (4-0) and Sparta Prague (5-0). The following matches included a painful 1-4 loss to Sporting in Lisbon, a 3-3 draw at home against Feyenoord, defeats of 0-2 to Juventus in Turin and 2-4 to PSG in Paris. Before the final round, the 2023 Champions League winner was not yet certain of progressing to the next round, but secured it by defeating Club Brugge 3-1. 

Real Madrid finished the group stage in 11th place, also well below expectations for a multiple Champions League winner and the current title holder. This time, victories were interspersed with defeats: 3-1 to VfB Stuttgart, 0-1 to Lille, 5-2 to Borussia Dortmund, 1-3 to AC Milan, 0-2 to Liverpool, 3-2 to Atalanta, 5-1 to Red Bull Salzburg, and 3-0 to Stade Brestois 29. Real recently suffered a setback in La Liga as well, losing 0-1 to Espanyol, who are near the bottom of the table.
